What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been

Image
I didn’t mention it before, but hundreds of Deadheads descended on Moon Palace on the last full day of my isolation for the “Playing in the Sand” Festival. First I saw on the news that John Mayer had pulled out due to testing positive for COVID. Then, the day before the first day of the Festival, this happened: https://variety.com/2022/music/news/dead-company-cancel-playing-in-the-sand-festival-covid-john-mayer-exit-1235148529/ But there were people partying in the suites on both sides of me, having already arrived for the event, and I couldn’t help but imagine that the musician next door might have been Bob Weir? https://youtube.com/shorts/J2iXMznwxak?feature=share Whomever it was, he brightened my Quarantine considerably. 🙏💕 Some day I’m sure that I will have a chance to enjoy international travel again. I got pretty lucky this time with Quarantine but don’t think I’ll want to test that luck again. It's going to be continental United States only for me for a while. If you have ...

Day 9: More MPQ Stories

Image
I've heard from others in Moon Palace Quaratine (MPQ) and will share their storeis as they come in.  Seems that a lot of couples and families are just kept in their room if they all test positive, which makes sense. These stories are cut-and-pasted from email correspondence so you may have to infer my side of the conversation a bit.  Story 1: " Good afternoon thank you for blogging your quarantine. My question to you is what does the examination consist of? We got tested on Thursday, January 6 and tested positive and we are now quarantined in our room until January 11. I booked my flight for January 12.  Thank you in advance. Happy that you are home.  They placed the purely palace sticker (on our door). We do still have the bar but it’s locked. My wrist band is the only one working, my kids are deactivated and my husbands as well.  We all tested positive. We are in a junior suite. After I read your blog. I noticed the person across from us was on quarantine...

Day 8: Ritz Carlton Cancun

Image
Since getting home, several people have reached out to me who are currently in quarantine in Cancun.  Travis, a young guy from California, has been put into quarantine at the Ritz Carlton in Cancun. They charge 50% room rate and he has to pay for his food during quarantine.  He taught me something new: the Moon Palace doctor implied that if you were from California then you had to have a negative swab to leave. Travis learned that it’s a matter of a water crossing versus a land crossing. If he flies to Tijuana from Cancun he can then drive home (4+ hours). And he will only need to do the five days quarantine, he will not be required to submit a negative test. This is an important loophole for those of you who require a water crossing to get home, because an infected person can test positive for up to six weeks:  https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/16/travel/testing-positive-for-covid-overseas.html This article is a little dated however, because it also says that it is unlikel...

Day 7: Home

Image
It’s wonderful to be HOME!!!!  Now that the quarantine is over, I have a few reflections that I want to share: First and foremost, although quarantine stinks, and I have issues with the communication and processes at Moon Palace generally, I give them very high marks for their handling of what I’m sure was a rise in positive guests following the holidays. I don’t regret going on this trip and would go there again.  However—if I had it to do over again I would not leave on such an early flight. I would leave during normal business hours so that I could get help if I needed it, and please plan to check out at the front desk. After speaking with others I don’t think that my experience was unique. They really require you to check out at the desk in order to settle up your balance and have your wristband removed/confiscated. That’s all part of how they keep the resort so safe amidst unrest in the region. Second, I found it surprising that there was no way to get common medicines li...

Day 6

Image
Got up at 3:30am to get dressed and clean the room. Put all linens in a bag and trash in another. I think I’m leaving the room cleaner than when I arrived.  Taxi doesn’t show up. 4:10am I start calling the desk. This was my worry because it’s hard to get people on the phone at a normal hour. I call 0 twice and am transferred twice to lines that don’t answer. I dial PR and I dial Transportation, no answer. Finally I just call Reception and at this point I’m in tears. She says “you’ve been released from Quarantine?” Yes, I explain that I have my letter and I’m packed and ready to go home. She says she will send a bellman to my room to get me. 4:20am a woman who says she’s the manager in charge calls and tells me that there is a balance on my account—I’m getting the impression that she has held my transportation as a result. I explain that Christopher in PR sent me an online link yesterday to pay my balance and he had the receipt. She says she will send my taxi. 4:25 she calls back an...

Day 5

Image
Last day of Isolation in Paradise!  I woke up to find my beloved espresso machine crawling with tiny ants. 😩 Took it apart, washed everything, disinfected the counter. Back in business.☕️ Life in the tropics! Moon Palace Quarantine (MPQ) friends, that clock on your bedside table is also an awesome JBL speaker. Move it out to your lanai if you have one, pair it to your phone via Bluetooth, and enjoy your favorite playlists. 🎶 Yesterday a couple from Canada who are here with me right now left a message on the blog. They said that they have a mandatory 14 days before returning to 🇨🇦. Every country - and even state - has different rules.  If you have questions about your quarantine terms or testing, press the➕“Medical Services” button on your room phone or dial 5 3481. There are different doctors on staff every day, mine was awesome so if you’re having trouble getting someone here’s his info: Dr. Eduardo Francisco Díaz López,  Médico General    C.P. 11404151 Ema...

Day 4

Image
Day 4 and I’m laser-focused on figuring out when I’ll be cleared to travel.  If you’ve been reading since Day 1, you’ll remember that when my husband put me on that golf cart to the quarantine housing on Sunday, he told my “handler” that we wanted daily testing. Yesterday nobody came. I suspect that is just because of limited resources, but I don’t know because nobody calls or tells me anything.  This is what I signed when I tested positive: It says that the “isolation benefit” commits the guest to stay inside the room for 14 days or until a negative test. 😬 However; since this document was prepared, CDC changed their guidelines and the quarantine period was shortened to 5 days on the Palace website:  https://www.palaceresorts.com/en/purely-palace . This guidance would have me checking out tomorrow! But then - just to keep things interesting - the CDC has changed their guidelines again since I’ve been in isolation. The new guidelines seem to suggest 10 days and take a “d...
